I am currently on a mission to whip out a chunk of new paintings for next month’s show at Caprice. My friend, Alex Beaver will be hanging his work as well. Yay! I will be hanging a variety of small and large paintings from my headpiece series, and can’t wait to see them in the space.

Also, the pot is stewing for another show at Canapé at the end of July, keep posted!

Looking forward to clearing out all furniture, and turning my house into an art space for a night. We are going to slap up works from local folks, and party!!!

Micallef’s Studio

What an expressive and lavish use of paint. As part of his Lauded Head Series, Antony Micallef’s headpieces bear a haunting essence, that is acheived through swift applications of charcoal, owing to, just as swift eliminations of the medium. His decision to create some of these sketches in strict monochrome, supplies an exacting contrast to his typically colorful paintings. Whether Micallef paints black, white, powder pink, or bright blue, his works are all gold to me.

More of Micallef’s paintings, as well as sculptures, can be seen here

After watching a video of Alberto Giacometti painting in his studio, I became instantly inspired to start sketching on my new 4’x 4′ canvas. It is refreshing to be more expressive when working on a preliminary drawing, and this larger format is the ideal way to get started.

AT THE MOMENT | Laura Spong

Steam Ahead, 2013, oil on canvas, 36″ x 48″

Locked In A Room With The Doors Open, 2013 oil on canvas, 36″ x 36″

When I visited the Greenville Museum of Art in SC, I wanted to run home with this painting by Laura Spong. I mean, drool. Firstly, the large format of the canvas snatched my attention, and secondly, her use of texture. The combination of contrasting colors, varying charcoal line, and velvety paint application is always a win for my attention. Her artist statement is just as lovely.
